Travel Cancellations - requests for letters from GPs
At this time, please see the below statement provided by Dr Richard Vautrey, BMA GP committee chair:
"Practices are under intense pressure, especially at this time of year, and this is not a good use of GP time, taking doctors away from treating ill patients coming through their doors.
"It is therefore completely inappropriate for insurers and travel agents to be asking their customers to approach family doctors with such requests.
"GPs are not in a position to advise whether patients are fit to travel in this situation and it is not their responsibility to do this.
"We would strongly advise our members that they do not need to respond to such requests from travel operators or insurers and ask that the public understands and respects the reasons behind this. The BMA will standfully behind any doctors who refuse to write such letters.
"If patients, do, however, request a summary of their pre-existing health conditions, practices are able to charge a fee to cover the cost of this non-NHS work.
"We would expect travel companies and insurers to be following the latest publicly available guidance and advice from the Government, PHE and their equivalents in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland and not passingthe buck to hardworking GP practices.
"We will be contacting the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and ABTA, the Travel Association to raise our concerns and ensure that their members are being advised appropriately."
I hope this information provides you with guidance and clarification.
Welcome to Moretonhampstead Health Centre
Welcome to our website and our Practice. Our aim is to provide excellent medical care that combines the traditional values of a family health service with the benefits of a modern practice.
We have designed our website to provide three things: comprehensive information about our Practice and our services; improved access to our services with the ability to arrange repeat prescriptions; access to health advice and information about other services and support groups.
The surgery is located behind Moretonhampstead Hospital. We have parking available and also access to a disabled parking bay.
The Health Centre is all on one level, with toilet facilities for wheelchair users.
